Karren makes a winning debut at Sandown Lakeside

Edgar Park celebrated a special result on Wednesday, 10 December 2025, when Karren stepped out for the first time and delivered in style, scoring a confident debut victory at Sportsbet Sandown Lakeside.

The three-year-old Shamus Award filly (from Scratchy Lass) was making her racecourse debut in the Kris Kalifatidis Plate (1200m) for trainer Lloyd Kennewell, with Zac Spain in the saddle. On a Good 4 surface, Karren showed the professionalism you love to see in a first starter, travelling strongly throughout and finding another gear when it mattered to win by 0.5 lengths.

From barrier 3, Spain had Karren into a comfortable rhythm early, allowing her to use her natural athleticism without doing anything fancy. Approaching the bend, she was building into the race exactly the way you hope a well-educated filly will, and when the pressure came, she didn’t flinch.

The official sectionals tell the story of a filly who can move: Karren stopped the clock in 1:11.71, with a last 600m of 34.60, and she was right where she needed to be in running, 1st at the 800m and 2nd at the 400m, before asserting late. She defeated Sass Appeal into second, with the well-fancied Layla (a $4.80 chance) finishing third, underlining the depth of the form for a metro maiden.

For Edgar Park, it was the perfect reward for the work that happens long before race day.

Bred and reared by Edgar Park, Karren’s win is a terrific advertisement for the full process, from breeding decisions through to early handling, preparation, and giving a young horse every chance to develop into a confident, competitive athlete.

Edgar Park extends congratulations to everyone involved in Karren’s first victory, including trainer Lloyd Kennewell and his team, and Zac Spain for a composed, confident ride on debut.
